Independence Day (Belarus)

Independence Day is a public holiday in Belarus, and it is observed on July 3 each year. The holiday commemorates the anniversary of Minsk's liberation from German troops by the Soviet army in 1944.

Belarus is a landlocked country in Eastern Europe. It was controlled by different countries until the 20th century. In 1941, Nazi Germany invaded the Soviet Union and captured Minsk, the capital and the largest city of Belarus, in the Battle of Białystok–Minsk. On July 3, 1944, the Soviet troops recaptured Minsk.

The Independence Day celebration on July 3 was made in 1996 during a national referendum by President Alexander Lukashenko, where 89% of voters voted to move the celebration date from July 27 to July 3.

From 1991 to 1995, Independence Day was celebrated on July 27 to commemorate the declaration of the Sovereignty of Belarus from the Soviet Union in 1990.

Some Belarusian political movements also celebrate Independent Day on March 25, the anniversary of the 1918 declaration of independence by the Belarusian Democratic Republic.
