Holidays in Brazil 2023

There are nine public holidays and several regional holidays at the statewide or municipal levels in Brazil in 2023. One public holiday falls on the weekend: New Year's Day.

New Year's Day
New Year Holiday, celebrated on January 1, 2023, is the first day of the year on the modern Gregorian calendar, and it is one of the most popular holidays in the world.

Good Friday
Good Friday is a Christian holiday celebrating the crucifixion of Jesus and his death at Calvary. It is observed on Friday immediately preceding Easter Sunday. Good Friday is celebrated on April 7, 2023.

Tiradentes Day
Tiradentes Day is a public holiday in Brazil, observed on April 21, 2023. The holiday commemorates the death of Joaquim José da Silva Xavier, also known as Tiradentes, who was born on November 12, 1746 and died on April 21, 1792 at the age of 45.

Labor Day
Labour Day is observed on May 1, 2023, and it celebrates the achievements of workers. The holiday originates in the eight-hour day movement, which is eight hours for work, eight hours for recreation, and eight hours for rest.

Independence Day
Independence Day, also known as Sete de Setembro, is a public holiday in Brazil, and it is observed on September 7, 2023. The holiday celebrates Brazil's Declaration of Independence from the United Kingdom of Portugal, Brazil, and the Algarves on September 7, 1822.

Lady of Aparecida Day
Lady of Aparecida Day honors Brazil's patron saint, the Virgin Mary Aparecida. The story goes back to October 1717 when three Brazilian fishermen were fishing in the Paraiba River, and they found a headless statue of the Virgin Mary. They found the statue's head when they cast their net into the waters again. In 2023, it is observed on October 12.

All Souls' Day
This is a day of prayer and remembrance for the souls of those who have died, and it is observed on November 2, 2023.

Republic Day
Republic Day, also known as Proclamation of the Republic, is a public holiday in Brazil, and it is observed on November 15, 2023. The holiday commemorates the establishment of the first Brazilian Republic in 1889.

Christmas Day
Christmas Day is celebrated on December 25, 2023, and commemorates the birth of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. Christmas Day is a holiday of sharing. People exchange Christmas gifts and cards with families and friends.
