Gospel Day is a public holiday in the Republic of Kiribati. It is observed two days before National Day. The holiday commemorates the arrival of Christianity on the islands.
Kiribati is an independent island nation in the central Pacific Ocean. People inhabited the islands thousands of years ago, and the first European contact occurred in the 17th century. The Gilbert Islands became a British protectorate in 1892 and the crown colony with the Ellice Islands in 1916. On July 12, 1979, the Gilbert Islands gained independence as the Republic of Kiribati.
In the early 19th century, people from all over the places visited the islands following the passing of trade. Missionaries also arrived at that time, and they converted islanders to Christianity. Christianity is the major religion in Kiribati. 57% of the population is Catholic, and 31% is Protestant.
