Errol Barrow Day (Barbados)

Errol Barrow Day is a public holiday in Barbados, and it is observed on January 21 each year. The holiday commemorates the birthday of Errol Barrow, the first Prime Minister of Barbados. He was born on January 21, 1920 in Saint Lucy, Barbados.

Errol Barrow was elected to the Barbados Parliaments in 1951 as a member of the Barbados Labour Party (BLP). Dissatisfied by the BLP's policies, in 1955, Errol Barrow and other politicians left the BLP. They formed the Democratic Labour Party (DLP), which won the 1961 general election, and Errol Barrow became the Premier of Barbados.

On November 30, 1966, Errol Barrow led his country to gain its independence from the United Kingdom, and he became the first Prime Minister of Barbados until 1976. In 1986, he was re-elected as Prime Minister, but a year after, he died at his home on June 1, 1987.

In 1998, he was declared one of ten Barbados' original National Heroes.
