Defender of Ukraine Day is a public holiday in Ukraine, and it is observed on October 14 each year. The holiday honors those who are and were serving in the armed forces defending the peace of Ukraine. Ukraine was part of the Soviet Union from 1922 to 1991 and proclaimed its independence on August 24, 1991.
On August 24, 2014, President Poroshenko proclaimed that Ukraine should celebrate the holiday in honor of the defenders of Ukraine, and replaced the former holiday called Defender of the Fatherland Day, which is a Soviet holiday celebrated on February 23.
