Independence Day is a public holiday in Ukraine, and it is observed on August 24 each year.
Independence Day commemorates the Declaration of Independence by the Verkhovna Rada on August 24, 1991, which was confirmed by the independence referendum on December 1, 1991. Over 92% of voters approved the declaration of independence in the referendum.
The first presidential elections in Ukraine were also held on December 1, 1991, and Leonid Kravchuk, the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada, was elected as the first President.
