Constitution Day is a public holiday in Slovakia, observed on September 1 each year. The holiday commemorates the anniversary of when the Slovak National Council passed the constitution of Slovakia on September 1, 1992. The constitution went into effect one month later, on October 1, 1992.
The former country of Czechoslovakia became a satellite state of the Soviet Union after World War II and was under Communist rule until late 1989, when the country became a democracy again through the Velvet Revolution. On January 1, 1993, the country was separated into the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
With the establishment of Slovakia, all parts of the constitution came into effect on January 1, 1993.
