Constitution Day is a public holiday in the Dominican Republic, and it is observed on November 6 or the nearest Monday each year. Constitution Day commemorates the adoption of the first Constitution in 1844.
On November 30, 1821, the Dominican Republic declared independence from the Spanish crown. However, the newly independent republic was merged with Haiti in 1822, only two months after the independence.
In 1838, Juan Pablo Duarte and his followers founded a secret society called La Trinitaria in the struggle for complete independence from the Haitian occupation. On February 27, 1844, the Dominican Republic declared independence from Haiti.
Soon after the independence, the first Constitution was adopted on November 6, 1844. The Dominican Republic Constitution has been changed many times since then.
