Arbaeen

Arbaeen is a holiday in the Muslim communities and it is observed on the 20th day of the month of Safar, the second month of the Islamic calendar.

Arbaeen occurs 40 days after the day of Ashura, and it commemorates the martyrdom of Husayn ibn Ali, who was born on January 10, 626, and died on October 10, 680, or 10 Muharram AH 61 of the Islamic calendar. He was the son of Ali ibn Abi Talib and Muhammad's daughter Fatimah, and the grandson of the Islamic prophet Muhammad

Husayn ibn Ali was the third Imam of Shia Islam, and he was martyred on the 10th day of the month of Muharram in the Battle of Karbala. According to the Muslim tradition, forty days is the usual length of mourning after the death of a family member or loved one.

The Battle of Karbala was a military engagement in Karbala, in present Iraq, between Muhammad's grandson, Husayn, and a larger military force of Yazid I. The battle is marked as the event that separated Sunni and Shi'a Islam, and it is particularly central to Shi'a Muslim belief.
