V.C. Bird Day (Antigua and Barbuda)

V.C. Bird Day is a public holiday in Antigua and Barbuda, and it is observed on December 9 each year. The holiday celebrates the birthday of Vere Cornwall Bird, the first Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda.

Antigua and Barbuda is an island country in the West Indies in the Americas with two major islands Antigua and Barbuda, and smaller islands. The islands gained independence from the United Kingdom on November 1, 1981.

Vere Bird became Prime Minister after independence. He was born on December 9, 1910. Vere Bird held a long and dedicated political history. He was the only chief minister from 1960 to 1967, the first and last Premier of Antigua, and the first Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda from November 1, 1981 to March 9, 1994.

He was declared a national hero in 1994 as the first prime minister and the independence leader of the nation. V.C. Bird Day was known as National Heroes Day. Still, the government changed the holiday name in 2014 and created another holiday named National Heroes Day, dedicated to those who have made significant contributions to the country. National Heroes Day is observed on October 26, but it is not a public holiday.
