Tishreen Liberation Day (Syria)

Tishreen Liberation Day is a public holiday in Syria on October 6 each year.

Tishreen Liberation Day commemorates the anniversary of the beginning of the Yom Kippur War, fought between Israel and the coalition of Arab states led by Egypt and Syria in 1973.

The war was part of the Arab-Israeli conflict. Israel captured Egypt's Sinai Peninsula and roughly half of Syria's Golan Heights during the Six-Day War in 1967.

October 6, 1973, was the Jewish holy day of Yom Kippur. That day, Egypt and Syria launched a joint surprise attack on the Israeli positions. Egyptian forces successfully crossed the Suez Canal and entered the Sinai Peninsula, while Syrian forces entered Golan Heights at the beginning.

Although the coalition of Arab states was pushed back by the Israeli forces in the following days, Tishreen Liberation Day is to celebrate the initial victories in the war. The war lasted 19 days and ended on October 25 with the victory of the Israeli forces.
