Statehood Day (Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina)

Statehood Day is a public holiday in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and it is observed on November 25 each year.

Statehood Day commemorates the anniversary when Bosnia and Herzegovina was re-established as a republic within the Yugoslavian federation by the Anti-Fascist Council of National Liberation of Yugoslavia in 1943.

Please note that the country of Bosnia and Herzegovina has two autonomous entities: the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Republika Srpska, with a third unit, the Brčko District. Statehood Day is only observed in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

During World War II, the kingdom of Yugoslavia was divided by Axis forces, and Bosnia and Herzegovina became part of Nazi Germany. Starting in 1941, Yugoslav communists organized their multi-ethnic resistance group and fought against the Axis forces. On November 29, 1943, the Anti-Fascist Council for the National Liberation of Yugoslavia (AVNOJ) reestablished Bosnia and Herzegovina as a republic.

Many military offensives against Nazis by the antifascist movement of Yugoslavia took place in Bosnia and Herzegovina. At the end of World War II, Bosnia and Herzegovina became one of six constituent republics in the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.
