State Flag Day is a public holiday in Azerbaijan, and it is observed on November 9 each year.
State Flag Day commemorates the anniversary of adopting "the Tricolour Flag" as the flag of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic in 1918.
Azerbaijan was under Iranian rule in the 18th century, and in 1804, the Russian Empire invaded Iran, which started the Russo-Persian War. The Russian Empire occupied Azerbaijan when the War was ended in 1813.
Following the Russian Revolution in October 1917, the Russian Empire was dissolved. Three nations Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan, formed the Transcaucasian Democratic Federative Republic (TDFR). Shortly after, Azerbaijan declared independence as the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic (ADR) on May 28, 1918.
After the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic (ADR) was formed, the tricolor replaced an earlier flag design on November 9, 1918, where the bright blue symbolizes Azerbaijan's Turkic heritage, the red stands for progress, and the green represents Islam.
In 2009, State Flag Day was established as a national holiday in Azerbaijan.
