Republic Day is a public holiday in Azerbaijan, and it is observed on May 28 each year.
Republic Day commemorates the anniversary when Azerbaijan declared independence as the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic from the Russian Empire on May 28, 1918.
Azerbaijan was under Iranian rule in the 18th century, and in 1804, the Russian Empire invaded Iran which started the Russo-Persian War. The Russian Empire occupied Azerbaijan when the War was ended in 1813.
Following the Russian Revolution in October 1917, the Russian Empire was dissolved. Three nations Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan formed the Transcaucasian Democratic Federative Republic (TDFR). Shortly after, Azerbaijan declared independence as the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic (ADR) on May 28, 1918.
However, the independence only lasted a short time, and the Red Army invaded and occupied Azerbaijan in April 1920. In 1991, Azerbaijan restored its independence after the collapse of the Soviet Empire.
