Spiritual Baptist Day, also known as Shouter Liberation Day, is a public holiday in Trinidad and Tobago, and it is observed on March 30 each year. The holiday commemorates the end of the 1917 Shouter Prohibition Ordinance, which prohibited the activities of the Shouter or Spiritual Baptists.
Spiritual Baptist is a religion developed among people of African descent in Trinidad and Tobago. Although the origin of the religion is unknown, it contains elements from Protestant Christianity and African doctrines and rituals.
Because the Baptists normally shout, clap, and sing loudly during their religious services, the religion was termed as Shouter Baptists. The activities of the religion in Trinidad and Tobago were prohibited in 1917.
During the fight to repeal the Shouters Prohibition Ordinance, the Shouter Baptists were changed to Spiritual Baptists. In 1951, the 1917 Shouter Prohibition Ordinance was eventually repealed.
