Independence Day (Trinidad and Tobago)

Independence Day is a public holiday in Trinidad and Tobago, observed on August 31 each year.

Independence Day commemorates when Trinidad and Tobago gained independence on August 31, 1962. Trinidad and Tobago became a British crown colony in 1797. The slavery abolishment took place in 1833 when Trinidad and Tobago was under British rule.

On August 31, Trinidad and Tobago proclaimed independence from the United Kingdom, with Elizabeth II remaining head of state as Queen of Trinidad and Tobago. In 1976, Trinidad and Tobago became a republic within the Commonwealth.
