South Canterbury Anniversary Day coincides with Dominion Day, which was celebrated on September 26, marking the anniversary the colony of New Zealand was granted the Dominion status by the British Empire with effect from September 26, 1907.

South Canterbury is the only area that still celebrates the Dominion Day nowadays with the name of South Canterbury Anniversary Day.
