Somhlolo Day (Eswatini)

Somhlolo Day, also known as Independence Day, is a public holiday in Eswatini, and it is observed on September 6 each year. The holiday commemorates the anniversary when Eswatini gaining its independence in 1968.

The Kingdom of Eswatini is a landlocked country in Southern Africa, and its population is composed primarily of ethnic Swazis. In the middle of the 18th century, the Swazis built their kingdom, which became a British protectorate in 1903, with the name the Swaziland Protectorate.

King Sobhuza II was chosen king when he was 4 months old in 1899 and came to power when he grew up. He played a major role in gaining independence for his country, which was granted in 1968. King Sobhuza II signed the role of a constitutional monarchy in the 1960s, but he opposed it and formed a party that won all seats in the pre-independence elections. In 1973, he repealed the constitution and became an absolute monarchy.

King Mswati III renamed the country from the Kingdom of Swaziland to the Kingdom of Eswatini in 2018.
