King Sobhuza II was born on July 22, 1899, and was chosen king when he was only 4 months old after his father, King Ngwane V, died suddenly in December 1899. King Sobhuza II played a major role in gaining independence for his country in 1968. He opposed the role of a constitutional monarchy which he was assigned in the 1960s, and formed a party that won all seats in the pre-independence elections. In 1973, he repealed the constitution and gained absolute power.
The Swazi economy prospered under his leadership during the rich natural resources. He died on August 21, 1982, and his son Mswati III became the new King.
