Santa Rosa de Lima is a public holiday in Peru on August 30 each year.
Santa Rosa de Lima, also known as Isabel Flores de Oliva, was born in Lima on April 20, 1586. According to legend, a servant claimed her face transformed into a rose in her infancy, and because of this, she took the name of Rose in 1597.
She wanted to devote her life to God and started to pray and fast secretly when she was young. She cut off her hair and rubbed pepper on her face to upset men when she grew up, and her beauty was admired. She also helped the sick and hungry around her community.
Rosa de Lima died on August 27, 1617, at the age of 31, her funeral was a major event, and all the public authorities of Lima attended. Pope Clement IX beatified her in 1667, and Pope Clement X canonized her as a saint in 1671. Her feast day was celebrated on August 30 in Peru.
