Battle of Angamos is a public holiday in Peru, observed on October 8 each year.
The Battle of Angamos was a naval battle between the navies of Chile and Peru at Punta Angamos on October 8, 1879. The battle became a decisive moment in the War of the Pacific between Chile and the allied countries of Peru and Bolivia. The battle was a complete success for the Chilean Navy.
During the battle, the Chilean navy destroyed the Peruvian fleets and killed the most renowned Peruvian naval officer Miguel Grau Seminario. The Peruvian Navy was heavily damaged, while the Chilean victory at Punta Angamos allowed the land to invade by the Chilean Army in Peru and Bolivia.
