RONPHOS Handover Day (Nauru)

RONPHOS is an abbreviation of the Republic of Nauru Phosphate. RONPHOS Handover Day is a public holiday in the Republic of Nauru on July 1 each year. The holiday commemorates the anniversary when the Nauru Phosphate Corporation formally changed its name to the Republic of Nauru Phosphate Corporation in 2005.

The Republic of Nauru is an island nation in the central Pacific Ocean. It is the third smallest country and the smallest island nation, with a population of about 10,000. In 1900, phosphate was discovered on the island, and companies from Australia, Britain, and New Zealand had been extensively mined for phosphate in the 1900s.

On January 31, 1968, Nauru gained its independence, and the people of Nauru purchased the assets of the British Phosphate Commissioners. In the following years, income from phosphate mining made Nauruans the richest people in the world.

However, the poor investment and the collapse of phosphate mining in 2002 significantly affected the company. The company cannot repay some loans, and many foreign workers left the country. On July 1, 2005, the Nauru Phosphate Corporation made many changes, including formally changing its name to the Republic of Nauru Phosphate Corporation as a change signal.
