Revolution and Youth Day, also known as Tunisian Revolution or Jasmine Revolution, is a public holiday in Tunisia, and it is observed on December 17 each year. The holiday was celebrated on January 14 before 2021, and marks the day President Ben Ali stepped down from the presidency in 2011.
Tunisia is the northernmost country in Africa and gained its independence from France on March 20, 1956. Habib Bourguiba, the leader of the Neo Destour Party, became the Prime Minister and then the first President of Tunisia. On November 7, 1987, Zine El Abidine Ben Ali became the second President in a bloodless coup d'état.
Tunisian Revolution began when Mohamed Bouazizi, a street vendor selling fruits from a cart, was enraged when local officials repeatedly demanded bribes and set fire to himself. His death inspired demonstrations throughout the country against food inflation, corruption, and lack of political freedom.
The protests continued for a month and led to the ousting of President Ben Ali on January 14, 2011, when he resigned from the presidency and fled to Saudi Arabia. In 2019, Ben Ali died of cancer in Saudi Arabia.
