Republic Day (Tunisia)

Republic Day is a public holiday in Tunisia, and it is observed on July 25 each year. The holiday commemorates when Tunisia overthrew the monarchy and proclaimed the Republic of Tunisia in 1957.

Tunisia is the northernmost country in Africa, and the indigenous people have inhabited the area for thousands of years. Over the years, Tunisia was under different rules, including the ancient Carthage, Romans, Muslims, the Ottoman Empire, and the French.

In 1881, the French defeated the Ottoman Empire, and Tunisia became a French Protectorate. In the early 20th century, several independence movements were formed, and nationalists started to strive for independence from France. After years of armed resistance, Tunisia gained independence on March 20, 1956, as a constitutional monarchy ruled by Bey (King) Muhammad VIII al-Amin. Habib Bourguiba, leader of the Neo Destour Party, was the Prime Minister of Tunisia.

On July 25, 1957,  the monarchy was abolished and Tunisia was declared a republic. Habib Bourguiba became the first President of the Republic of Tunisia.
