Republic Day is a public holiday in Turkey, observed on October 29 yearly. The holiday commemorates the foundation of the Republic of Turkey on October 29, 1923, after the victory in the War of Independence, a war of independence waged by the Turkish National Movement against the Allied powers from May 1919 to July 1923.
Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the Turkish War of Independence leader, declared that Turkey was a republic on October 29, 1923, and served as the first President from 1923 until his death in 1938. He is also considered the founder of the Republic of Turkey.
