Republic Day (Slovakia)

Republic Day is a public holiday in Slovakia, observed on January 1 each year. The holiday commemorates the anniversary of Czechoslovakia being peacefully separated into two sovereign states of the Czech Republic and Slovakia on January 1, 1993.

Czechoslovakia was long part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and declared its independence when the Austro-Hungarian Empire collapsed at the end of World War I. During World War II, it was occupied by Nazi Germany. Czechoslovakia then became a satellite state of the Soviet Union, and the country was under Communist rule until late 1989, when the country became a democracy again through the Velvet Revolution.
