Queen's Birthday (Cook Islands)

Queen's Birthday is a public holiday in the Cook Islands and it is observed on the first Monday in June each year. The holiday is to celebrate the birthday of the monarch, however, the date is the Queen's official birthday, which may not be the monarch's actual birthday.

The Cook Islands is a self-governing island country in free association with New Zealand. People inhabited the islands about 1000 years ago. In 1890, the Cook Islands became aligned to the United Kingdom and became part of British dominions in 1900. The United Kingdom made the islands part of the colony of New Zealand one year after.

The islands remained a New Zealand dependent territory until August 4, 1965, when the islands became a self-governing territory in free association with New Zealand. As a result, Cook Islands celebrates Queen's Birthday as a public holiday.

One of the important traditions during the Queen's Birthday holiday is to release the Queen's honors list to recognize those who have made significant contributions to the country.
