Plurinational State Foundation Day is a public holiday in Bolivia, and it is observed on January 22 each year. The holiday commemorates the anniversary of the country's name being changed to the Plurinational State of Bolivia in 2009.
Spanish explorers arrived and took control of the territory when the Spanish defeated the great Incas in the 16th century and named the territory Charcas. After gaining its independence from the Spanish Empire in 1825, and named the country after Simón Bolívar, a Venezuelan military and political leader, led many American countries to independence.
To recognize the multi-ethnic nature of the country, in 2009, a new constitution changed the country's official name to the Plurinational State of Bolivia. Evo Morales, the country's first president from its indigenous population, promulgated the new constitution.
