National Women's Day

National Women's Day is a public holiday in Mozambique, observed on April 7 each year. The holiday commemorates the anniversary of Josina Muthemba Machel's death on April 7, 1971.

Josina Machel was born on August 10, 1945, and she was a key figure in the struggle for the emancipation of Mozambican women. She joined the Mozambique Liberation Front (FRELIMO) when she was 18 and received military training.

She was appointed head of FRELIMO's Department of Social Affairs in 1969 when she was 24. In the same year, she married Samora Moises Machel, who later became the first President of Mozambique on June 25, 1975.

In 1970, Josina was diagnosed with liver cancer. She became seriously ill in April 1971 and died on April 7, 1971, at 25. In 1972, the Mozambique Liberation Front (FRELIMO) declared April 7 as National Women's Day in Mozambique.
