National Salvation Day (Azerbaijan)

National Salvation Day is a public holiday in Azerbaijan, and it is observed on June 15 each year.

National Salvation Day commemorates the anniversary when Heydar Aliyev was elected as the Chairman of the National Assembly of Azerbaijan.

In 1991, Azerbaijan restored its independence after the collapse of the Soviet Empire. However, newly independent Azerbaijan struggled with political instability, and individuals and groups fought for power in the country. In 1992, the Azerbaijan Popular Front Party came into power, but it cannot control the situation. The newly established republic faced the danger of the civil war.

People began to ask Azerbaijan politician Heydar Aliyev to return to Baku and lead the country. On June 15, 1993, Heydar Aliyev was appointed as the Chairman of the National Assembly of Azerbaijan and brought stability to Azerbaijan. On October 10, 1993, he took an oath and became the third President of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
