National Heroes Day (Saint Vincent and the Grenadines)

National Heroes Day is a public holiday in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines on March 14 yearly. The holiday commemorates the death anniversary of Chief Joseph Chatoyer, who was killed on March 14, 1795.

Saint Vincent and the Grenadines is an island country in the Caribbean Sea. Indigenous people inhabited the islands for thousands of years. Christopher Columbus first saw the islands in 1498 during his third voyage. Indigenous people aggressively prevented the English and Dutch from claiming the island in the following years until 1719, when the French successfully colonized it.

In 1763, France ceded the island with Grenada to Britain after the Seven Years' War. In 1769, the Carib indigenous people and the British started the First Carib War due to the colonial expansion on the island. The war ended in 1773 with a peace agreement delineating boundaries between British and Carib areas on the island.

However, Britain had no intention to follow the peace agreement, which led to the Second Carib War in 1795. The war was fought between the British and the Carib people. Chief Joseph Chatoyer led the Carib people with support from the French and successfully gained control of most of the island at the beginning.

However, on March 14, 1795, Chief Joseph Chatoyer was killed by the British force at Dorsetshire Hill, and his death led to the loss of support from France. Although the war continued, the Caribs lost the advantage without the French support. In 1797, the British suppressed the Carib rebellion.
