National Day, also known as Independence Day, is a public holiday in Nigeria, and it is observed on October 1 each year. The holiday celebrates Nigeria's proclamation of independence from the United Kingdom on October 1, 1960.
Nigeria is a country in West Africa, and its southern coast is on the Gulf of Guinea in the Atlantic Ocean. The Royal Niger Company ruled South Nigeria in the late 19th century, and in 1900, the company's territory came under the direct control of the British government. In 1914, the British combined Southern Nigeria and Northern Nigeria, with the same borders as current Nigeria.
The nationalist movements across Africa led to the independence of Nigeria in 1960.
