Democracy Day is a public holiday in Nigeria on June 12 yearly. The holiday celebrates the Nigerian general election on June 12, 1993, the first presidential election since the 1983 military coup.
Democracy Day was previously celebrated on May 29 to commemorate when the military handed over power to an elected civilian government in 1999. On June 6, 2018, the government declared June 12 the new Democracy Day.
