Muharram / Ashura (India)

Muharram / Ashura is a gazetted holiday in India and it is one of the most important holidays. Muharram is the first month of the Islamic calendar, and the first day of Muharram marks the beginning of a new Islamic year.

The month of Muharram is a very important festival for all Muslims, and it is common for people in the community to fast during the holy Muharram period.

Ashura is "tenth" in Arabic, and it is the 10th day of the month of Muharram. Ashura marks the day that Moses and the Israelites were saved from Pharaoh by God creating a path in the Sea.

For Shi'a Muslims, Ashura is a solemn day of mourning the martyrdom of Husayn ibn Ali, who is the grandson of the Islamic prophet Muhammad.
