Mozambican Heroes Day

Mozambican Heroes Day is a public holiday in Mozambique on February 3 yearly. The holiday commemorates those who died in the Mozambican War of Independence, which lasted almost 10 years from September 25, 1964, to September 8, 1974.

Mozambique became Portugal's colony in the early 16th century. In 1962, the Mozambique Liberation Front (FRELIMO) was formed and began the armed struggle for independence from Portuguese colonial rule.

The Mozambican War of Independence started on September 25, 1964, when attempts at peaceful negotiation by the Mozambique Liberation Front (FRELIMO) were abandoned. The independence war lasted almost 10 years until September 8, 1974, when the Lusaka Accord agreement was signed, which led to the independence on June 25, 1975.

The war involved many battles, casualties, and losses. On February 3, 1969, Eduardo Mondlane, the President of the Mozambican Liberation Front (FRELIMO) since 1962, was killed by explosives smuggled into his locale. The Mozambican Heroes Day was celebrated on February 3, the anniversary of when Eduardo Mondlane was killed.
