Mother Teresa Day

Mother Teresa Day is a public holiday in Albania, observed on September 5 each year.

Mother Teresa Day commemorates the death anniversary of Mother Teresa, who was born in Albania when it was under the Ottoman rule on August 26, 1910, and her name was Anjezë Gonxhe Bojaxhiu. She joined the Sisters of Loreto when she was 18 years old and took the name of Teresa after Thérèse de Lisieux, the patron saint of missionaries, in 1931 when she took her religious vows as a nun.

She was sent to Calcutta and taught in a women's school. At the same time, she was helping the poor people in Calcutta. In 1950, she left school and founded the Missionaries of Charity to help all poor and sick people. The Missionaries of Charity was first expanded throughout India, then abroad, and it is operated in over 100 countries nowadays.

Mother Teresa won the Noble Prize in 1979. She died on September 5, 1997, at the age of 87. Mother Teresa was beatified in 2003 and was canonized on September 4, 2016.
