Melilla Day

Melilla Day is a regional holiday in the autonomous city of Melilla in Spain, and it is observed on September 17 each year. The holiday commemorates the date when Spanish troops conquered Melilla and made it part of Spain in 1497.

Juan Alfonso Pérez de Guzmán, the 3rd The Duke of Medina Sidonia, promoted the seizure of Melilla. In 1497, Pedro de Estopiñán lead the troop and stormed the city. The city surrendered virtually without a fight on September 17, 1497.

Melilla is a Spanish autonomous city located on the northwest coast of Africa, and it is bordered by Morocco. It is one of the two Spanish cities located in mainland Africa: Melilla and Ceuta.

On March 14, 1995, the Statute of Autonomy was granted to both Ceuta and Melilla.
