Macau Special Administrative Region Establishment Day is a public holiday in Macau, observed on December 20 each year. The holiday commemorates the transfer of sovereignty over Macau from Portugal to the People's Republic of China and the establishment of the Macau Special Administrative Region.
Macau had been a port for merchant ships since the fifth century. In 1557, it was leased to Portugal as a trading post until 1887, when the Portuguese managed to make Macau a Portuguese territory in the Sino-Portuguese Treaty of Peking. The treaty was one of the unequal treaties in the aftermath of the Second Opium War.
On December 20, 1999, Macau was transferred to the People's Republic of China.
