Lady of Aparecida Day (Brazil)

Lady of Aparecida Day is a public holiday in Brazil, and it is observed on October 12 each year.

Lady of Aparecida Day honors Brazil's patron saint, the Virgin Mary Aparecida. The story goes back to October 1717 when three Brazilian fishermen were fishing in the Paraiba River, and they found a headless statue of the Virgin Mary. They found the statue's head when they cast their net into the waters again.

They caught plenty of fish when they netted again. The fishermen cleaned the status and named it Our Lady of the Conception who Appeared. Soon after, the miracles spread to people, and more and more people came to honor the Blessed Virgin Mary.

As the devotion grew, the first chapel was built in 1745, and the first church was built in 1846. In 1904, Pope Pius X granted a canonical coronation to the image, and in 1930, Pope Pius XI declared Mary under the title Patroness of Brazil.
