Independence Restoration Day (Estonia)

Independence Restoration Day is a public holiday in Estonia, and it is observed on August 20 each year. The holiday celebrates the anniversary when Estonia regained independence from the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) on August 20, 1991.

Estonia has been under different rules over the centuries. In 1940, the Soviet Red Army moved to Estonia and incorporated Estonia into the Soviet Union, and during World War II, Nazi Germany occupied Estonia in 1941. In 1944, following the surrender of Nazi Germany, the Soviets took Estonia and incorporated it into the Soviet Union again until Estonia declared its independence in 1991.
