Independence Day (Sudan)

Independence Day is a public holiday in Sudan, observed on January 1 yearly. The holiday commemorates the anniversary of Sudan's independence from Egypt and the United Kingdom in 1956.

Sudan, officially the Republic of Sudan, is a country in Northeast Africa. Sudan's history tracks back to Ancient Egypt, about 5000 years ago. Over the years, Sudan was under different rules. Egypt conquered Sudan in the 19th century. However, the United Kingdom occupied Egypt in 1881. Under pressure from the United Kingdom, Egypt agreed to share its sovereignty over Sudan with the United Kingdom.

In the 20th century, following the growth of nationalism on ending the United Kingdom's occupation, the United Kingdom agreed to grant independence to Sudan. As a result, Sudan declared its independence on January 1, 1956.
