Independence Day (Kyrgyzstan)

Independence Day is a public holiday in Kyrgyzstan, officially the Kyrgyz Republic, and it is observed on August 31 each year. The holiday commemorates the anniversary when Kyrgyzstan achieved its independence in 1991.

Kyrgyzstan is a mountainous landlocked country in Central Asia. People inhabited the territory for thousands of years under different empires and dynasties, such as the Mongol Empire, the Manchurian Qing dynasty, and the Uzbek Khanate of Kokand. In 1876, the territory became part of the Russian Empire.

After the 1917 Russian Revolution, Soviet power was established in the region. The Kara-Kirghiz Autonomous Oblast was created in 1924, and it became the Kirghiz Soviet Socialist Republic (SSR) on December 5, 1936, one constituent republic of the Soviet Union.

Following the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, Kyrgyzstan declared independence on August 31, 1991, as the Republic of Kyrgyzstan, which was changed to the Kyrgyz Republic in 1993.
