Independence Day from Colombia (Panama)

Independence Day from Colombia is a public holiday in Panama, observed on November 3 each year. The holiday commemorates the anniversary when Panama gaining independence from Colombia in 1903.

In 1510, the Spanish founded the first permanent settlement called Santa María la Antigua del Darién in the area, and in 1513, the leader of the settlers claimed the whole area under the Spanish crown.

After over 300 years of Spanish rule, on November 28, 1821, Panama successfully overthrew the Spanish rule without military conflicts. After that, Panama joined the Republic of Gran Colombia in 1921. Gran Colombia dissolved in 1931, and Panama became part of modern Colombia. Panama attempted to separate from Colombia several times in the 19th century, but none succeeded.

The United States wanted to control the transcontinental canal through Panama, but Colombia rejected the requests. This prompted the United States to help Panama to gain its independence. On November 3, 1903, Panama declared independence from Colombia with help from the United States, and as a return, the United State controlled the Panama Canal Zone.
