Independence Day (Estonia)

Independence Day is a public holiday in Estonia, and it is observed on February 24 each year. The holiday commemorates the anniversary of when the Republic of Estonia declared independence on February 24, 1918. For centuries, Estonia was under different rules of Swedes, Germans, and Russians.

The Russian Empire conquered Estonia in 1710, and during Russian rule, the Estonian national identity began to emerge in the 19th century. Following the February Revolution in the Soviet, the Estonian Provincial Assembly was formed in 1917, and the executive body of the Provincial Assembly declared the independence of Estonia on February 24, 1918.
