Independence Day is a public holiday in Bulgaria, observed on September 22 each year. The holiday commemorates the anniversary when the independence of Bulgaria was proclaimed on September 22, 1908.
Bulgaria was liberated from the Ottoman Empire on March 3, 1878, and became the autonomous Principality of Bulgaria. On September 6, 1885, the Principality of Bulgaria and the autonomous Ottoman province of Eastern Rumelia were united.
On September 22, 1908, Prince Ferdinand of Bulgaria formally proclaimed independence in Tarnovo and raised Bulgaria from a principality to a kingdom.
