Independence Day (Belize)

Independence Day is a public holiday in Belize, and it is observed on September 21 each year. The holiday commemorates the anniversary when Belize gained its independence from Britain in 1981.

Belize is a Caribbean country located on the northeastern coast of Central America. The Maya civilization spread across the territory about 1500 BC and its presence lasted until the arrival of the Europeans. In the early 16th century, Belize became part of the Spanish Empire.

In 1716, the first British permanent settlement was founded in Belize, and in 1798, the British defeated the Spanish forces in the Battle of St. George's Caye. The British claimed to administer the region in 1836, but Belize only became a British Crown Colony in 1862.

During the Great Depression in the 1930s and World War II, the economy in Belize was stagnated, which increased the voice of being independent. Britain granted Belize self-government in 1964, however, the progress of independence was hampered because Guatemala claimed Belize was part of Guatemala. On September 21, 1981, Belize finally gained its independence.
