Commonwealth Day, also known as Sovereign Day, or Empire Day, is a public holiday in Belize, and it is observed on the Monday closest to May 24 each year.
Commonwealth Day commemorates the birthday of Queen Victoria, Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland from 1837 to 1901.
After she died on January 22, 1901, people began to celebrate her birthday, May 24, as Empire Day in the British Empire since 1902. Belize was the British colony before its independence on September 21, 1981. As a result, Empire Day was also a public holiday in Belize.
In 1958, Empire Day was renamed Commonwealth Day by the then Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Harold Macmillan. The celebration day was changed to the second Monday in March in most Commonwealth countries in 1973, however, the celebration day of Commonwealth Day in Belize is still on May 24.
