Independence Day is a public holiday in Armenia, and it is observed on September 21 each year. The holiday commemorates the anniversary of when Armenia regained independence from the Soviet Union in 1991.
Before World War I, Armenia was in two parts: Eastern Armenia and Western Armenia. Western Armenia was under Ottoman rule, while Eastern Armenia was under Russian rule.
In February 1918, Russian-controlled Eastern Armenia, Georgia, and Azerbaijan formed the Transcaucasian Democratic Federative Republic (TDFR). Shortly after, all three nations declared independence, and Armenia declared independence as the First Republic of Armenia on May 28, 1918.
However, independence only lasted a short time. The Red Army invaded Armenia on December 2, 1920, and proclaimed it the Soviet Republic. Seven years after, Armenia regained independence in 1991 with the collapse of the Soviet Union and adopted a new constitution on July 5, 1995.
