Icelandic National Day is a public holiday in Iceland, and it is observed on June 17 each year. The holiday commemorates the foundation of the Republic of Iceland in 1944.
In 1918, Iceland became a fully sovereign and independent state in a personal union with Denmark, and the King of Denmark was the King of Iceland. During World War II, Denmark and Iceland both remained neutral. However, Germany invaded and occupied Denmark in 1940 and the United States took over the defence of Iceland in 1941.
In 1944, a referendum was held in Iceland on ending the union between Denmark and Iceland, and on June 17, 1944, Iceland declared the independence.
