Gospel Day is a public holiday in the Cook Islands, and it is observed on October 26 each year. The holiday commemorates when Christianity was first brought to the islands in 1821.
The Cook Islands is a self-governing island country in free association with New Zealand. People inhabited the islands about 1000 years ago, and the first European contact took place in 1595. John Williams was a missionary of the London Missionary Society (LMS) and the first missionary who brought Christianity to the islands.
John Williams and his wife voyaged to the archipelago located in the South Pacific Ocean in 1817. In 1821, they landed on the island of Aitutaki, the second most populated island in the Cook Islands. Christianity quickly spread across the island and then spread to the other islands, including Rarotonga, the largest island of the Cook Islands. Currently, most of the population in the Cook Islands is Christian.
